Go Green! What is green? We believe that this means to do the right thing. There are many consequences of the way we do things. Unfortunately, the public is not always aware of what some of these consequences are. For example, what are the consequences of having coal fired electric plants nearby? For most of us, it means that when we flip a switch, the lights come on. At the end of the month, we get a bill so that we can pay for this luxury. . . but what is the cost of this luxury? According to the Kansas Department of Health and Human Services, in 2007 there were over 2,700 pounds of mercury emitted from point sources (e.g. coal fired power plants) in Kansas. This is the equivalent to the amount of mercury in 1,200,000 thermometers. Mercury emissions will continue to rise, with more and more electricity produced from coal.
Sulfur is another pollutant that is released during the burning of coal. In Kansas, over 126,000 tons of sulfur was emitted in 2007. Sulfur is one of the key components in the formation of acid rain. In an agricultural area, is it good to have pollution that directly impacts so many of our neighbors? (click on box) These are just some of the impacts of the current way we do things. It is important that we do something to offset the way we are doing things now. |
